Dying Michael told his little brother: “If anything happens to me, it’s not your fault. I’ll always love you.”
A 12 year-old boy is facing trial on an adult basis after he stabbed a 9 year-old boy four times in the back. The unprovoked attack happened in a playground when Jamarion Lawhorn pulled out a knife and attacked, leaving the fatally-wounded Michael Connor Verkerke to run home with his little brother Kameron.
Nine year-old Michael collapsed in the porch of his home, gasping to his brother: “If anything happens to me, it’s not your fault. I’ll always love you.” Michael’s family desperately tried to stem the flow of blood and Michael was rushed to hospital; however the nature of his injuries and volume of blood lost meant that he could not be saved.
Jamarion Lawhorn went to a nearby house after the stabbing and used the householder’s telephone to ring the police to give himself up. According to the householder, Glen Stacy, Lawhorn said: “Hi. I just stabbed somebody. Please pick me up. I want to die. I don’t want to be on this earth anymore. Please pick me up.”
The police rushed to the scene of the crime, but when they went to the aid of the victim, Lawhorn called out to attract their attention: “Hello. I’m right here. You’re going the wrong way,” before presenting himself to the police officers with his arms outstretched ready to be handcuffed and shouting “finally.”
According to the police, Lawhorn told paramedics in the ambulance that he had been carefully planning the attack for a year and wanted to be sure of “taking someone else with” him when he killed himself. He said he wanted to go to prison, or die and wondered whether there would be anyone in prison who might kill him.
One of the investigating officers said: “Jamarion was asked why he did that and he stated because he wanted to go to jail. He stated that he did it because he is bad and always does stupid things, and gets in trouble a lot. Jamarion stated that he was thinking they would probably kill him for doing something like this and ‘inject stuff in his body’.”
However, despite his repeated wish to be be incarcerated, witnesses report that Lawhorn wept and shook during his court appearance; he will face being tried as an adult later in the year.
